Frequently Asked Questions

Flameworking is a technique which uses a torch to melt rods of glass or tubing to form objects (beads, marbles, sculptures, etc).  The technique is sometimes referred to as "lampworking" because in the past the source of the flame was an oil or paraffin lamp with foot-powered bellows.

I use a technique called flameworking.  I use a torch to melt glass rods around a steel rod dipped in a release (to keep the glass from adhering to the steel). Most of my glass rods are from Murano, Italy (Effetre). Each bead is then decorated in the flame with layers of glass, stringers (thin lines of glass), latticinos (twisted glass rods), goldstone, foils, silver mesh, etc. I enjoy capturing these decorations in clear glass (called encasing) to give the design depth. After each bead is embellished, I slowly cool ("anneal") the bead in a computer-controlled kiln to remove the stress in the glass. Then each bead is hand cleaned to remove the bead release and assembled into the designs you see.

I hear this question the most.  I say it takes more than 15 years  of experience working with glass plus 1/2-1 hour at the torch, plus time to cool (aka anneal) overnight in a kiln, then 15 minutes to remove and clean by hand.  This doesn't include any prep time making twisted cane (aka latticinos) or sliced cane (aka murrine), sandblasting, and other embellishments/techniques to be added.
